Abstract

This paper analyzes the various reports written on the festivities of the double canonization of Fathers Luís Gonzaga (1568-1591) and Estanislau Kostka (1550-1568) in 1726, which had a particular echo in the context of similar celebrations organized by the Jesuits in Portugal. The festivities program, its architecture and scenography contributed to the metamorphosis of urban spaces and, once again, to reaffirm the Jesuits capacity to organize festivities and other performing actions, which involved the Court and different social states. We put the festivities in Braga, Santarém, Lisbon and Évora in a dialogue by analyzing the different written testimonies left about these events, and by interrogating the work made and by trying to understand the common lines underlying all these jubilees.
