Abstract
The deposition of barium over Ag(111) was examined and found not to lead to any standard growth mode. Silver atoms diffused interstitially to the surface, preventing the work function from reaching the bulk barium value and the silver Auger signal to decrease to ratio. A low surface energy intermetallic compound formed. Coadsorption of oxygen blocked further diffusion and the barium may then grow without silver.
