Abstract

In morphology, almost all reference literature has for some time covered the demarcation between inflexion and derivation, between compounds and syntactic structures and between compounding and derivation. Recognizing that, far from being exhausted, the arguments on this issue must still be discussed, this short paper will focus on the last of the topics pointed out. Thus, based on the criteria of distinction between compounding and derivation adopted in traditional grammars and in the structuralistand generative models, we will try to discuss to what extent the usually advanced differences are adequate to maintain compounding and derivation at different levels (cf., for example, Anderson 1992), or whether, as proposed by, among others, Booij (2010), the treatment of these processes can be carried out in a unifying way, both regarding the analysis and the theoretical framework, under the label 'construction'.
