Abstract
Founded by Alexander the Great (331 B.C.), Alexandria was famous for its Library and Museum. These were a product of the first Ptolemies’ policy rather than of Alexander, who spent his life building an empire elsewhere. Ptolemy I built a huge palace in whose gardens was built a ‘house for the Muses’ – the Museum. This, associated with the Library, was the centre of contemporary knowledge. Here was gathered the whole body of Greek literature, as well as scholars charged with preserving and disseminating this knowledge.
