Abstract
This article aimes at discussing the semantic values of verbal periphrasis
acabar de Vinf, deixar de Vinf and parar de Vinf in contemporary European
Portuguese.
I will essentially focus on the discussion of the data found in literature and in the
proposals of such different authors. This will be carried out by identifying, analysing and describing the different values that result from the deformability and interdependence of linguistic forms that integrate these configurations. It is the aim of this paper to explain, at the level of metalinguistic representation, particular phenomena that result from the plasticity of linguistic forms and constructions.
I argue that the compatibilities and restrictions presented in these constructions result not only from aspectual values but also from the constructions themselves or the verbs with which they co-occur. Apart from the inherent properties of the predicates
involved, the determination of the arguments – C0 and C1 – is relevant to the values of different sentences.
