Abstract

This chapter explores issues related to blind people’s access to visual arts museum collections. It will examine other access possibilities that go beyond the physical and the communicative access, consid-ering, specifically, the relevance of aes-thetic access as a possible way of bring-ing together visual arts and blind people. Through the development of a case study carried out at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum — Modern Art Collection, it is argued that the aesthetic experience is fundamental for the reconfiguration of blindness in visual arts museums, leading to new forms of approach and new ways of consider the role of visually impaired people within current museological practice.
