Abstract

During the Portuguese Dictatorship, the RTP Song Contest was one of the major song contest and television shows in Portugal. In the first edition, several well-known singers performed in this competition, but in the late 1960s, other singers and authors, linked to different music scenes, began to participate, mirroring the changes that occurred in Portugal during these years. In this text I will analyse how the RTP Song Contest became a platform, how it created, challenged and mediated an image of femininity, and how the press contributed to this. I will discusse several changes that occurred between 1964 and 1974, in order to contribute with some perspectives about the role of music and television in the public sphere.
