Abstract

This paper deals with a particular aspect of the practices, beliefs and symbols linked to the moment of death in medieval and early-modern society. Taking as a starting point the moments and descriptions on the death and burial of the Portuguese kings in the 16^th century, with incidental incursions through other chronological periods, the aim is to stress the links - material, ritual, symbolic - between the death of the king and the power of royalty in Early-Modern Portugal.
