Abstract
Following the trend of marxist criticism towards utopian socialists, Portuguese communists began by stressing that the realization of a utopian society would depend on the use of means differed from such an end. However, throughout the second half of the 20th century, utopia would shape the means of communist action, qualifying militant performativity. To this development we call the utopianization of militancy. Historically understandable in the light of the political chronology of the Portuguese 20th century, such utopianization must also be examined in the light of broader changes concerning the relations of power in modern liberal societies.
