A methodology to assess home PV capacity to mitigate wind power forecasting errors

Abstract

With the technological developments recorded in the last decades, there is an increasingly need to use those developments in order to reduce the stress over the environment. Thus, one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century is to decrease fossil fuels' consumption and boost their consequent replacement by other cleaner and more environmentally friendly energy sources. One of the most adopted action plans, towards obtaining a more environmentally sustainable planet, involves the integration of renewable energy as a primary form of energy production, thus reducing consumption of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. Several countries present a high potential, not only in Photovoltaics, but also in Wind production, which allows these two energy sources to be explored with some impact. However, wind production has a high degree of variability, which makes its production values not always consistent with forecasted values. Consequently, there is a need to mitigate those wind power forecast errors. This paper proposes a methodology to assess the home photovoltaic potential that can be used to mitigate those wind power forecast errors caused by this high wind variability. This study considers only domestic photovoltaic and storage systems, which can be used to mitigate the wind forecast errors throughout the day.
