Abstract
Of all the military orders founded in the Middle Ages, the Order of the Temple stands out due to the complexity of its history. In Portugal, after its extinction, it gave way to the Order of Christ, established in 1319. After 700 years, it is important to focus on the study, this time, on Music and the musical heritage of military orders, a topic still largely absent from academic studies. In this sense, we will see how the military heritage was conveyed in the dimension and musical experience of the Order of Christ, focusing on its Convent of Tomar. Although its musical history was considered irrecoverable, sources relating to the Order of Christ in the 16th and 17th centuries revealed a rich and intense musical activity by its Choir and Chapel, considered brilliant at the time, among other religious orders. Friar Fernando de Almeida (1604 - 1660), the most prominent composer of the Order of Christ, contributed to this, who unfortunately met a tragic end at the hands of the Inquisition. All these questions and results are systematized in this poster, extracted from the book “A Música no Convento de Cristo em Tomar”, as a result of the author's master's thesis in Historical Musical Sciences
