Abstract
In the collection of documents of the North American art historian Robert C. Smith, bequeathed by testamentary disposition to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, there are seven A5 notebooks with extensive notes on music, royal operas, and its artists, in the chronology that runs between the reigns of D. Maria I (1777-1816) and that of D. Luis I (1861-1889). Based on the notebook dedicated to the music in the reign of D. Maria II, shaped by decrees, ordinances and offices, we propose to approach this matter in the light of one of the more interesting aspects of her reign: the cultural management reported to the music of her House, which took in the reorganization of the Royal Chamber Orchestra, carried out in 1839, its emblematic moment.
