Abstract
The debate regarding female emancipation was hot during the 19th century and the periodical press would play a fundamental role in the expansion of ideas aimed at revising the social role of women. The clashes between renewal and conservatism on the subject were intense, sometimes generating multiple discussions, with replicas and rejoinders promoted by means of the printed pages. This work brings two brief case studies of such a process, addressing journalistic writings promoted on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, Julieta de Melo Monteiro in Brazil and Sílvia da Vinha in Portugal.
