A guerra naval luso-neerlandesa na Ásia no século XVII, católicos e protestantes e a revolução militar

Esta comunicação pretende relacionar a guerra naval luso-neerlandesa na Ásia no século XVII com a discussão de assuntos historiográficos mais vastos e de interesse internacional, como o famoso tema da “revolução militar”. A intenção será revelar as potencialidades extrapolatórias do assunto e de como, devidamente explorado, ele se pode prestar ao alargamento dos horizontes tradicionalmente confinados da historiografia convencional do Estado da Índia. Uma maneira possível de fazê-lo, para quem trata de história militar moderna, é tentar olhar para os temas da perspectiva da famosa "revolução militar”. Por muito que se tenha posto em questão a pertinência do conceito, discuti-lo continua a ser uma boa maneira de "entrar na conversa" historiográfica mais geral, mesmo que seja para rebatê-lo. Na discussão historiográfica do tema, prestar se-á particular atenção a um dos pontos que tem sido abordado com alguma frequência no debate da “revolução militar”: a questão da existência ou não de diferenças militares significativas entre católicos e protestantes em conflitos como os que opuseram portugueses e neerlandeses na Ásia.

This paper will attempt to discuss the Portuguese-Dutch naval war in Asia in the 17th Century in light of broader historiographical issues of international interest, such as the famous subject of "military revolution." The intention will be to reveal the potentialities the subject offers for extrapolation and how, properly exploited, they can help expand the traditionally confined horizons of the historiography of the Portuguese in Asia. Although the relevance of the “military revolution” concept has been called into question, discussing it continues to be a good way of joining the international historiographical conversation, even if only to deny that any such revolution ever took place. Particular attention will be paid to one of the points that has been frequently addressed in the “military revolution” debate: the question of whether there existed significant military differences between Catholics from Southern Europe and Protestants from Northern Europe in conflicts such as those that opposed the Portuguese and the Dutch in Asia.
