Abstract
Historical knowledge currently accepts that the Iberian Christian Society contemporary of the Reconquest was organized for war. The main purpose of this research was to explain the meaning of the previous statement between 1128 and 1249 referred to the western portion of the Iberian Peninsula corresponding to what would become the Portuguese Crown area of influence. In order to achieve this goal, we have analised the way the king and other Christian powers conducted military operations. The analised dimensions were the relationship between landscape and warfare, mobilization possibilities and limitations, obtaining resources for war, fortification, the execution of war, the training, the military obligations, the exemptions and desertion to military service, logistics, the psychological perspective and the fate of those who were defeated in combat. The answers to the questions posed over each one of the presented dimensions were obtained through a methodology that gathered information from sources – mostly published – with data proceeding from other knowledges and clue interpretation. These procedures made possible to identify many aspects concerning preparation and execution of war that are similar to those identified in other parts of the Iberian Peninsula as well as other aspects that seem to be specific of the western part of the territory.
