Abstract
This article discusses the epistemological assumptions underlying the treatment of the definition, as an activity and a result, considering the main points highlighted in different theories from Classical Antiquity to contemporary times: the entity to be defined, the definition of definition and its typologies, methods, and rules for the formulation of good definitions, as well as its boundaries. To this end, it is necessary to go back to the first questioning about the definition, to think about its development over time and the way in which these aspects are reflected in the lexicon sciences and in terminology, in particular, how they have incorporated them in its practices, highlighting the central role of natural language definition in the scientific context.
