Abstract
This study aims at outlining the epistemological tenets required to use the definition in terminology, as an activity and product, taking into consideration the following: entity to be defined; definition of definition, definition typologies, and methods and formulation rules of good definitions, being aware of its limitations.
We start our analysis in the classic period, when the first questions on definition arose, and continue on to the terminist theories of the mental language. Next, we refer to a period when special attention was given to conceptual issues and formal languages were proposed with the intent to overcome the limits of natural languages. In this analysis, we did not forget the referential theories of philosophy and language, in a time when the sciences were stating their status and methodologies. Finally, contemporaneously, we relate epistemology and terminology, paying special attention to both theoretical and methodological issues arising in the process of formulation of definitions.
