Abstract
Amadora is a Portuguese city, in the outskirts of Lisbon, that underwent radical transformations throughout the 20th century. Once a village of predominantly rural characteristics, sprinkled with agricultural properties and seen as leisure resort for the Lisbon bourgeoisie, it became one of the most densely populated cities in the country as a result of two processes: the suburbanization of Lisbon along the railways and the installation of new industries, which needed an intensive workforce. This paper intends to present the preliminary results of a prosopographic analysis of the Clube de Futebol Estrela da Amadora (CFEA), from the 1930’s until the end of the 1980’s, emphasizing the importance of a documental set of sporting sources frequently ignored by historical research – the clubs’ proposals of membership. Founded on the 22nd of January 1932, CFEA’s history necessarily reflects the multiple transfigurations of the landscape in which it was founded. Through an analysis of the socio-professional composition of its associates, we intend to understand if the club accompanied – or not – the evolution of the city itself, and the pace at which those changes took place. This is a type of source that allows us to trace social and occupational profiles, geographical dispersion and naturality of the club members, asymmetries in terms of education and gender, among other elements that become all the more impressive when crossed with the history of the city and the country, whilst not forgetting the global dynamics that shaped contemporary sports associationism.
