Abstract

This chapter addresses an ecocritical approach to the second Ferreira de Castro’s novels set on the south of the Brasilien Amazon. Its core subject was thepacification of the fearful Parintintin, undertaken by the General Rondon’s “civilized men” at the beginning of the 1920’s. We analyze to what extent the Amazon Equatorial Climate, a primary environmental factor, played a prevailing role in the native threats towards other Amazonian inhabitants. We also examine the Amazon heritage portrayed in this narrative, represented by the rivers Madeira and MaiciMirim and by the vegetation, as well as its influence on the Human Ecology dynamics of the jungle, the characters’ fortune and the story’s construction.
