Abstract

This chapter revisits the main steps and challenges faced
by the municipality of Viseu, a historic city in the hinterland
of central Portugal, regarding public water supply. In a modern
perspective, this system began to develop in 1879, when the first
project was designed. Reformulated, it would come to materialize,
although partially, between 1897 and 1900, after concession to a
company of private capital. Insufficient to meet the growing needs
of the population, it was later reinforced with the opening of new
groundwater abstractions and, already in the 1980s, with the use of
flows from the Dão River, captured in the Fagilde dam. The growing
trend of the urban population, combined with the climate changes
affecting the region, demand, among other measures, new models
of water resources management and a renewed call for sustainable
consumption.
