Personal information

With a PhD in Music and Musicology, Interpretation branch,  at the University of Évora, the soprano Tania Valente divides her artistic activity with a career as an investigator at CESEM (NOVA-FCSH) and the Theatre Studies Center (FLUL) and Professor at the Music School of the National Conservatory.

She began her musical studies at the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon. She took a Degree in Modern Languages ​​and Literature: English and German Studies (University of Lisbon) and Singing  (ESML). Later she obtained the degree of LGSM (by Licenciate the Guildhall School of Music and Drama) by Trinity College.

She studied singing with Helena Afonso (IGL), Ana Paula Russo and Marina Ferreira (JMP) Luis Madureira and Elsa Saque (ESML), Ana Ester Neves, Lucia and Elvira Lemos Ferreira. She also attended "Lieder" Masterclasses with Jeanette-Fávaro Reuter and Walter Moore, an opera Masterclass with Mara Zampieri, and vocal masterclasses with Tom Krause (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation), Enza Ferrari, Yvonne Minton (Estoril International Music Courses) Elsa Saque and Oliveira Lopes (2nd Course "Health and Singing" UCP), João Lourenço (New Lisbon University ) and Flávio Carvalho (University of Évora)

As an opera singer, she was "Fanny" in The Cooper  by Thomas Arne (Trindade Theatre), "2nd Dame" at Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and "Sebastiana", a Portuguese version of Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne of Mozart. Of her authorship. In addition to performing regularly in recitals, she is a member of the Gulbenkian Choir since 2005. With this choir she has participated in numerous concerts of symphonic choral music, music for choir A Capella, CD recordings, tours, and operas, most notably " Samson Delilah "by Saint-Saens. "Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky, "Norma" by Bellini and "Medea" of Cherubini, "Tanhäuser" Wagner, “Falstaff” and “Otello” by Verdi, “Die drei Pintos” by Mahler/Weber, “Les Pres aux clercs” by Ferdinand Herold (concert and recording),  the world premiere in Portugal of the  Cantata -Opera "Momente" Stockhausen and the recording of the album "o retiro", by Rodrigo Leão, with a tour of the Lisbon and Oporto Coliseums. 

Her research interests include science and vocal pedagogy and relationships between music and literature. She collaborated with "Glosas", the  MPMP music magazine.

In 2017, she released her first solo album, "Gustavo Romanoff Salvini: Cancioneiro Musical Português", with pianist Bernardo Marques and guests, with the support of the GDA Foundation.

She is also the author of the book "Portuguese Language in Lyrical Singing: historical context and relations between phonetics and technique". In 2020, she launched a modern, transcribed, revised and commented edition of "My Singing Lessons: Notes to Vaccai for the Portuguese",by G.R.Salvini through Ava Editions. She did concert-presentations of this recording in 5 portugueses cities, in Paris and Bruxels. 

She wrote and presented for RDP-Antena 2 the radio program "Claraboia: Portuguese music and literature" and "Haskalah: Jews in German music".

In 2023, she spoke and sang at the official ceremony of the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust in the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, presenting the concert "Música em Theresienstadt" with the pianist Ana Jacobetty.
