Graduated in Environmental Health from Lisbon School of Health Technology - Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon has two Master degrees: Safety and Ergonomics from Lisbon University and Applied Toxicology from Surrey University. In 2010 concluded her PhD in Occupational and Environmental Health from Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública, New University of Lisbon.
The principal research topics are occupational toxicology, food safety, exposure assessment, exposure to mixtures and risk assessment. Actually, she is Director and Professor of Environmental Health Degree Program and Coordinator of Environment and Health Research Group in Lisbon School of Health Technology.
Since September 2015, Dr. Viegas is also a co-opted member of the Risk Assessment Committee in European Chemical Agency (ECHA) where she is involved in assessing the risk of a substance arising from the uses of a substance when an application for authorization is submitted.
Dr. Viegas research projects on environmental, occupational toxicology and food safety have been supported by government agencies and international organizations (e.g., Portuguese Authority for Working Conditions, Foundation for Science and Technology, European Commission) as well as major industries located in Portugal. Through her career, Dr. Viegas has mentored about 15 graduate students and have participated in several assessments of Masters and PhD thesis.
Dr. Viegas publish mostly on occupational toxicology and environmental exposures to chemical agents that can happen through different environmental compartments such as food.
Dr. Viegas has authored or co-authored more than 50 scientific publications, including original articles in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, special articles and full proceeding papers, as well as 200+ conference abstracts. As a consultant and advisor, Dr. Viegas has provided her expertise to professional associations, major companies and collaborate with several research groups nationally and internationally. She is also collaborating on the Editorial Boards of two scientific journals with international circulation.
