Rui Lopes doutorou-se em História Internacional na London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) e é investigador do Instituto de História Contemporânea da NOVA FCSH. Foi professor na LSE e na Goldsmiths, University of London. Trabalha sobre cultura na Guerra Fria, bem como sobre a dimensão internacional do Estado Novo e do colonialismo português, tendo publicado o livro “West Germany and the Portuguese Dictatorship, 1968–1974: Between Cold War and Colonialism” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) e variados artigos científicos.
É membro do conselho editorial da revista Práticas da História: Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past e coordenador do projecto “Amílcar Cabral, da História Política às Políticas da Memória”. Ao abrigo do programa Investigador FCT, está neste momento a pesquisar sobre a imagem de Portugal na ficção audiovisual ocidental ao longo da ditadura salazarista.
