Degree in Biology, from the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon, and a PhD in Biomedicine, from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, NOVA. Currently, a researcher at the Education and Research Centre (ERC) of APDP – Diabetes Portugal (the Portuguese Diabetes Association) and at the Centre for the Study of Chronic Diseases (CEDOC) – NOVA Medical School.
Since 1999, pursues research in the field of Diabetes, first in animal models and cell cultures, and currently in clinical studies and implementation research of healthcare, namely the betterment of pathways for Diabetes prevention and management. Participates in several national and European research projects in these areas (ex: Joint Action CHRODIS, MANAGE CARE, EU-CDEC, PRE-START). Was recently the Principal Investigator for an exploratory project dedicated to alternative biomarkers of glycemic control, supported by a Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) grant. / Has received several awards and distinctions, being the most recent a Pedro Eurico Lisboa Award, given by the Portuguese Society of Diabetologia and Bayer (2014), and a Citizenship Grant, given by Roche (2015).
