Research interests

Paulo Jorge de Sousa Pinto (https://doi.org/10.54499/DL57/2016/CP1453/CT0016) holds a MA on History of the Portuguese Expansion (1994) and a PhD. in Historical Sciences (2011). His post-doctoral project focused on “Conflict and Collaboration - Presences and Representations of the Overseas Chinese in the Ibero-Asian Societies (16th-19th centuries)” (2012-2017). He is currently a researcher at CHAM – Centro de Humanidades (Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa – NOVA FCSH). He is the coordinator of a set of collaborative projects involving several Filipino institutions, named “Portugal-Philippines: Connected Histories” aimed at promoting contacts and enhancing mutual knowledge between Portugal and the Philippines (https://portugalphilippines.fcsh.unl.pt/). He teaches “History of the Portuguese in Asia” (degree in History) and “The Indian Ocean. Societies, Commerce and War” (MA in History of the Portuguese Empire) at NOVA FCSH. His fields of work are the Early Modern Southeast Asia, European presence in Asia (16-18th centuries) and the Iberian overseas empires. He has published several books on these subjects, namely The Portuguese and the Straits of Melaka, 1575-1619: Power, Trade and Diplomacy (Singapore University Press, 2012), Tinan 500 Portugal-Timor (Dili, 2015) and The Islands Beyond the Empire - Portuguese Essays on Early Modern Philippine History (16th-18th Centuries) (org.) (Manila, Foreign Service Institute, 2023).
