Research interests

I am an evolutionary biologist with primary interests in the use of molecular markers to address questions in population genetics and evolutionary ecology of disease vectors and pathogens.

Until 2013, I have been the PI of a project entitled “Past and present population genetics of the vector Aedes aegypti: a tool for dengue control policies”. Presently, I am coordinating a multidisciplinary project entitled "Urban Malaria in Africa: new insights into social, geographic and vector population genetics factors", focusing on Bissau and Luanda.

 

My present main interests are vector-borne diseases and the study of dengue and chikungunya mosquito vectors (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus).

Other study organisms include the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

 

Current research topics include:

•  Landscape genetics in Aedes sp.

•  RAD-sequencing and genome mapping tools

•  Molecular basis of insecticide resistance in vector mosquitoes

•  Temporal population genetics of Aedes aegypti in different dengue epidemiological settings

•  Phylogeography of Aedes aegypti island populations
