Main technical skills

  • Environmental Toxicology mainly related with the toxicity of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals and their mixtures in the aquatic environment.
  • Main technical skills: Genotoxicity (Comet assay, micronucleous and erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities); Histopathology; Enzymatic and non-enzymatic biomarkers; RT-PCR; Western Blot; Gas Chromatography (GC) Mass Spectrometry(GC-MS); In vivo and In situ assays.

Research interests

Currently my research interests focus on the study of the mechanisms and interaction effects of PAHs on aquatic organisms on ecologically relevant conditions. I'm particularly interested in the study of the mechanisms of bioactivation of PAHs, the identification of the type of metabolites and adducts formed in this process and its relationship with genotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. I´m also interested in the molecular mechanisms normally associated with carcinogenesis, in particular involved in DNA repair and fixation of mutations and their effects at the level of cells and tissues (e.g., apoptosis versus necrosis). At the same time, in vitro bioassays using primary hepatocyte cultures of marine fish (economically and ecologically important) as a research tool and as a potential enabling expeditious develop techniques for environmental risk analysis model.
