I graduated in Microbiology and Genetics by the University of Lisbon in 1998 and completed my PhD degree in Molecular Genetics at the same University in 2005. I have performed my postdoctoral studies in mouse models of complex diseases in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and in the National Health Institute Doutor Ricardo Jorge, in Lisbon. My major research interest focus on novel approaches to study complex disorders. I am articularly interested in dissecting gene-environment interactions, given that these disorders result from the complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. I have two major ongoing projects in this field, namely the National Health Examination Survey for which a biobank of biological samples and corresponding data of a representative sample of the Portuguese population is being set and the study of gene-environment interactions in health and disease - a Portuguese Survey. These projects include the use and integration of enormous quantity of data, which we believe will constitute a major contribution to the knowledge in the field. |
