Maria Cristina Dias Joanaz de Melo é doutorada em História e Civilizações, subárea de história do ambiente pelo Instituto Universitário Europeu de Florença (2010) e mestre em História contemporânea pela NOVA FCSH em História contemporânea século XIX.

Em 2017 foi editora, conjuntamente com Estelita vaz e Ligia Pinto, do livro Environmental history in the making, Springer, 2 Vols, publicação que resultou do II World Conference In Environmental History ICEHO, Guimarães 2014, (International Consorcium for Environmental History Organization).

Investigadora integrada no IHC desde 2011, tem como principais interesses de investigação o estudo de recursos hídricos cinegéticos, hídricos e florestais nos séculos XVIII e XIX em Portugal e na Europa. No plano metodológico, trabalha aspectos de Landscape Reading Methodologies in historical perspective. Desenvolve actualmente o projecto de pós-Doutoramento no IHC “Managing public property and resources of common use – water“. Interessa-se igualmente por história aplicada na forma em como a investigação pode ser útil ao planeamento do futuro em matérias ambientais.
Desde 2016 participa como investigadora convidada no projecto de investigação “The co-evolution Guimarães Urban Ladscape: Relations between man and water resources (1853-2001)Scientific Domain: Environmental History; 01-10-2016-30-09-2017. Paulo Ramísio, EEUM (Coord.), Lígia Pinto EEUM, Cristina Joanaz FCSH_UNL.
