Research interests

  • Marco Painho was born in Elvas, Portugal, in October 9, 1960 and is currently a Full Professor at the NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS of the Nova University of Lisbon (UNL).
  • Research interests include Geographical Information Systems and Science, (Spatial) Decision Support Systems, Data Integration, Spatial Analysis,  Geographic User Generated Content, Information Infrastructures, New Technology Implementation GIS Education and Distance Learning (e-learning).
  • He has a degree in Environmental Engineering from the College of Science and Technology of the Nova University of Lisbon, a Master of Regional Planning (MRP) from the University of Massachusetts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Geography (Ph.D.) from the University of California. He obtained his habilitation from the Nova University of Lisbon
  • Besides his teaching activities, Marco Painho was NOVA IMS’s Director (2000 -2010), as well as the Coordinator of Master’s programme in Geographic Information Systems and Science via e-learning (2001 – 2008 and 2013 - ). He is the coordinator of the Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies (Erasmus Mundus).
  • He is author and editor of several publications (over 200) including books, chapters in books and articles. He has published in several national and international journals and conference proceedings.
  • He participates on a regular basis in national and international conferences and seminars as a paper author, session moderator, as well as in organising and programme committees of which ECIS’96, JEC’97 GISPlaNET’98, AGILE2002 – 2007 and CISTI 2013 are examples.
  • He has acted as a referee in scientific journals such as the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Transactions in GIS, Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, Environmental Modelling and Software, in the European Conference on Information Systems, in the Conference on Geographic Information Science (AGILE) and also in the Meetings of the Portuguese Association of GIS Users (USIG), the Portuguese Information Systems Association (APSI) and the Portuguese Association of Environmental Engineers (APEA). He was an evaluator for the European Programme INFO2000 (multimedia and geographic content) and a consultant for the European Programme FORM-AMI.
  • Marco Painho is the scientific co-ordinator of several funded research & development projects (25 projects) as well as community consulting (60 projects) within the New Technology Laboratory (LabNT). Sample projects include the Digital Environmental Atlas for the General Directorate for the Environment, the Spatial Geo-referenced Database for the National Statistics Institute, the Digital Map of European Ecological Regions for the National Museum of National History in Paris, the implementation of a GIS for resource management in a natural park in Brazil, SuGIK - Sustainable Geographic Information Knowlwdge Transfer for Postgraduate Education in Cape Verde and Mozambique (EDULINK), the Geographic Information System for Bus route Management (SIGGESC) for the Institute of Mobility and Transportation, and the Digital Sports Atlas of Mozambique.
  • He regularly advises graduate students (Masters and PhD) at NOVA IMS and other schools in the GIS area. He is also called as external committee member to Master and Phd dissertation defences and habillitation committees at other institutions.
  • He has served scientific and professional bodies of which the followings are examples: Member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency; Portuguese representative of the Thamatic Cooperation Group: Earth Observation and Monitoring (within the IV Framework Programme – environment and Climate); President of the General Assembley of USIG (Association of Geographic Information Systems Users); President of the General Assembley of APEA (Portuguese Association of Environmental Engineers); Member of the Editorial Council of  EDINOVA; Member of the Management Board e Steering Committee do European Topic Centre for Nature Conservation, Paris; Founding member of APEA (Portuguese Association of Environmental Engineers).
