Research interests

The field of research is the development of accurate, less time consuming, more efficient and reliable analytical methods, based on gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (quadrupole) GC/qMS, gas chromatography/time of flight mass spectrometry (GC/TOFMS), comprehensive gas chromatography (GCxGC/TOFMS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with refractive index, UV and diode array detection, identification and quantitation of organic compounds in complex matrices specially volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Several sample preparation methodologies are used such as liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), solid phase extraction (SPE) and solid phase micro-extraction (SPME). Special interest is devoted to analyse enantiomers by enantioselective GC (eGC) and eGCxGC/TOFMS. Synthesis and coating of new chiral stationary phases based on ionic liquids (ILs) for GC is now beeing developped. The main Achievements were: i) Characterization of the volatile fraction (VF) composition of wines, spirits and olive oils, establishing correlations with sensorial evaluations and electronic nose. GC x GC fingerprint patterns for variety identifications, determination of the turning points in the malolactic fermentation and aging processes. ii) Chemical characterization volatiles with potential biological activity, regarding insect behaviour in connection with host selection. iii) Monitoration of electroremediation procedures for the removal of toxic components from environmental compartments. iv) Analysis of pollutants, such as dioxins, PCBs, PAHs, pesticides, herbicides and their metabolites, in different environmental compartments (air, water, soils, sediments). v) Development of new stationary phases for enantio gas chromatography Integrates the Centro de Química Fina e Biotecnologia (CQFB), research line Analytical and Bioorganic Chemistry – Química Biorgânica e Analítica. CQFB integrates Laboratorio Associado REQUIMTE - Laboratório associado Química Verde - Tecnologias e Processos Limpos. REQUIMTE, is the most important Chemistry and Chemical Engineering network in Portugal, resulting from a partnership between CQFB (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and CEQUP (Universidade do Porto).
