Luís Silva holds a B.A. (4 years) in Social Anthropology (1995), a M.Phil. in Anthropology: Heritage and Identities (2000), and a Ph.D. in Anthropology (2007) awarded by the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal. He has a continued experience of research from competitively funded projects since 1993. He has published a handfull of books, more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, and over a dozen book chapters. He has conducted research in mainland Portugal, the Azores archipelago, and the Spanish region of Extremadura. His main research interests include rural tourism, ecotourism, cultural heritage, national identity, international frontiers, traditional water mills, renewable energy (innovations), and low-carbon energy transitions. He currently supervises two Ph.D. students. He was a national delegate at the COST Action TU 1401 - "Renewable Energy and Landscape Quality" (2014-2018). He was a Senior Research Fellow at the CRIA - Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA NOVA FCSH) from September 2018 to May 2025. He has coordinated CRIA's Research Group on Environment, Sustainability, and Ethnography from January 2020 to May 2025. He has been regularly involved in evaluating ERASMUS+ proposals and research project proposals for the European Commission since 2017.
