Luís Silva holds a B.A. (4 years) in Social Anthropology (1995), a M.Phil. in Anthropology: Heritage and Identities (2000), and a Ph.D. in Anthropology (2007) awarded by the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal. He has a continued experience of research from competitively funded projects since 1993. He has received 4 research grants from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and another from the former Centre for Studies of Social Anthropology (CEAS - ISCTE). He took part in 3 international research projects and 17 national ones, 3 of which as Principal Investigator (PI). He is Co-PI of a 3-year research project approved for funding by the FCT. He has published 5 books, 32 peer-reviewed journal articles and 13 book chapters. He has coedited 1 book and 1 journal issue. He has evaluated research project proposals for the European Commission, the European Research Council and other funding institutions. He has also evaluated Erasmus+ Youth projects for the European Commission. He has conducted research in mainland Portugal, the Azores archipelago, and the Spanish region of Extremadura. His main research interests include rural tourism, ecotourism, cultural heritage, national identity, international frontiers, traditional water mills, renewable energy (innovations), and low-carbon energy transitions. He currently supervises one Ph.D. student. He has carried out peer review for 12 international journals and 4 national ones. He was a visiting researcher at the Department of Anthropology of the University of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain, and at the laboratory ART-Dev in Montpellier, France, in 2010. He was a national delegate at the COST Action TU 1401 - "Renewable Energy and Landscape Quality" (2014-2018). He was a Senior Research Fellow at the CRIA - Centre for Research in Anthropology (CRIA NOVA FCSH) from September 2018 to May 2025. He has coordinated CRIA's Research Group on Environment, Sustainability and Ethnography from January 2020 to May 2025.
