Research interests

Luís Brites Pereira is specialized in International Economics and was educated in Portugal and South Africa (see educational qualifications below). His academic career includes responsibilities in lecturing, research and management, most notably as the Deputy-Director of Nova SBE’s Centre for Globalization & Governance. He has also lectured in the MBA programs of The Lisbon MBA (Católica-Lisbon/Nova SBE) and Wits Business School (South Africa). His academic research has focused mainly on the economic governance responses to the challenges posed by globalization, and has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals such as Governance and Open Economies Review. As a Post-Doc Research Fellow based at the Tropical Research Institute, Luís focused on the developmental challenges of African countries, especially the Lusophone ones. His consulting experience, meanwhile, entails policy-work for institutions such as the Central Bank of Cape Verde and the Macao Monetary Authority (China), amongst others. As for his professional activity, Luís served as an economic advisor in the Ministry of the Economy & Innovation, during which he addressed the international linkages of Portugal’s Science & Technology policy. More recently, he served in public office as the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. At present, Luís is a Resident Researcher at the NOVAFRICA Center for Business and Economic Development. 

Current research interests include: applied and policy-orientated research, motivated by his desire to have a meaningful impact through innovative problem-solving and evidence-based analysis
