Research interests

José Tavares holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, where he nurtured his interest in political economy and macroeconomics. José is currently professor of economics at Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon, and researcher at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London. José has previously taught at Harvard University and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

José´s academic research focuses on diverse issues, including the relationship between democracy and growth, the cost of gender discrimination, and the role of globalization in controlling corruption.

José´s research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Monetary Economics, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Public Economics, and the European Economic Review, and in collective volumes edited by Harvard University Press, MIT Press, and Princeton University Press. It has received comments in the New York Times, Time Magazine, La Repubblica, Handelsblatt, Expresso, and Público, as well as the Vox.eu and Eurointelligence economics op-ed sites.

Current research interests include: José is currently interested in the political economy of federalism, the effect of political gender quotas, and stock market responses to economic policy choices.
