Felipe Pathé Duarte is an assistant professor at NOVA School of Law, specialising in “Peace, Justice, and Security” in relation to Sustainable Development Goal 16. He co-coordinates the Master’s program in Law and Security. Additionally, he co-founded and directs the Knowledge Centre War and Law LAB, which is part of the Research and Development Centre in Law and Society (CEDIS), where he also serves as Deputy Director. Appointed by the European Commission, Felipe Pathé Duarte is a member of the Research Committe of the EU Knowledge Hub on the Prevention of Radicalisation and Extremism, providing strategic guidance and policy recommendations. He has worked as a consultant for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Mozambique (Cabo Delgado) to counter violent extremism, as well as for the Council of Europe on issues related to social media and hybrid threats. Since 2016, Felipe Pathé Duarte has been an international security analyst for RTP, the public television network in Portugal, where he offers geopolitical analysis during prime-time broadcasts. Additionally, Felipe is a guest professor at the High Institute of Police Sciences and Internal Security, and he provides training at the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training.

He holds a PhD in Political Science and International Relations, with a focus on Security and Defence, from the Portuguese Catholic University. His academic background also includes a Master’s degree in Political Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Coimbra. Felipe has been a visiting fellow at Oxford University and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. He was also a Fulbright fellow in the U.S. National Security Policymaking Program at the U.S. State Department. His research focuses on political violence, insurgency, violent non-state actors, and the geopolitical implications of extremism, significantly contributing to both academic and policy discussions.
