Personal profile

Research interests

The main interests are related with malaria treatment and antimalarial drug resistance research. The malaria in pregnancy remains a health problem with a significant relevance in maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, it is important to assess the effectiveness of WHO-recommended intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and determine the association of this effectiveness with prevalence and selection of molecular markers that are previously associated with antimalarial drug resistance. Depending of the epidemiological context, the already know progressive selection of less ACT sensitive parasites might hamper the control or elimination efforts. Several endemic areas uses ACT as Artesunate-Amodiaquine (ASAQ) as first line treatment. It is important to understand and characterize the molecular markers associated with the decrease in ACTs efficacy. The pharmacogenetic characteristics can potentially influence the drug response. The decrease in the drug efficacy can be associated with human host factors such as drug metabolizers, and transporters.

Research interests

As coordinator of IHMT animal facility is specially committed to improve animal health status and implementation of standard operational procedures, to promote animal welfare and the best practices. All procedures are designed and developed, under her supervision, in accordance with the current legislation, namely with Directive 2010/63 / EU transposed into national law by DL 113/2013 of 7 August, on the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes.

Research interests

As head of Shared Technical services, that included several areas as diagnostic, insectary, animal experimentation, decontamination unit, biosafety, quality and Occupational health, the main goals are the implementation of biosafety and occupational health programs that ensures the best institutional practices in these areas.
