Personal profile

Research interests

I am a comparative historian of law and politics in the later Middle Ages, with a particular interest in the influence of juristic and publicist thought on legal and political practice. I am currently working on a comparative study of the judicial business and the social and intellectual profiles of the two sovereign courts of later medieval France and Portugal, the Paris Parlement and the Casa do Cível/Casa da Suplicação. My doctoral thesis studied the impact of the Romano-canonical ius commune on the administration of justice, litigation and the relationship between different jurisdictions and political powers in Portugal, between c. 1150 and c. 1350. My postdoctoral research at the University of Amsterdam looked at how royal governments in England, France and Portugal in the 14th and 15th centuries dealt with the problem of corruption.
