Rita Araújo obtained her PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (specialization in Conservation Science) at FCT NOVA in 2019. The thesis entitled “Os Livros de Horas do século XV nas colecções portuguesas: matéria, forma e significado” was supported by a grant won in a competitive call (SFRH/BD/52314/2013) funded by the Foundation of Science and Technology. This research made for the first time a systematic characterization of the bookbindings of 73 Books of Hours, contributing to a new understanding of the effect of the different typologies of bindings in the conservation of the written and illuminated textblock and contributed for the development of new conservation strategies to conserve these precious artworks. From her Ph.D. research resulted 12 papers in international peer-reviewed journals in the field of Conservation Science and 3 book chapters. The results of her research were also presented in national and international conferences with 13 oral and 5 poster communications, and 2 articles in proceedings. Rita has an interdisciplinary profile, gained during her Masters and Ph.D. education in Conservation Science, that is fundamental to achieve new strategies to preserve and conserve the cultural heritage. In 2013 she won a grant from the Department of Conservation and Restoration - DCR at FCT NOVA to assist in teaching courses from Bachelor and Master’s degrees (e.g. Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage – Graphic documents and Fundamentals of Paper Conservation). Since 2014, she has also assisted in other teaching courses at DCR FCT NOVA, several curricular projects related with the conservation of graphic documents area and was co-supervisor of 2 Master’s theses. She is currently a researcher at LAQV-REQUIMTE and Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) research units, where she is working on the study and conservation of graphic documents. From them it is important to emphasize the participation in the Austrian project P27302-G2: “Material analysis and conservation of a late antique illuminated manuscript on purple parchment Vienna Genesis (ÖNB, HAD, Cod. Theol. Gr. 31)”, in 2018, and the project “Citizens memories: preserving documents and photographs in centennial voluntary associations and other non-profit organizations, with innovative and affordable solutions”, in 2019, both supported by a grant won in a competitive call.
