Personal profile

Research interests

I am a researcher with a fixed-term contract at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences of the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH). I hold a Ph.D. in Sociology and my main field of research is Urban Sociology, with a focus on urban inequalities, namely gentrification and displacement, and on qualitative methodologies. In 2013, I earned an FCT Ph.D. scholarship at the Sociology Department of NOVA Univ. Lisbon and the Anthropology Department of the Univ. of Massachusetts Boston, doing fieldwork in both cities and adopting a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. In 2014, I earned a post-doctoral fellowship by FCT at NOVA and at the Univ. Gothenburg, where I worked with experts on gentrification. Building on my doctoral research and becoming engaged in housing activism, I grew interested in every day of long-term residents in gentrifying neighborhoods, particularly working-class women, and in resistance against gentrification-led evictions. In 2019, I earned a fixed-term junior research contract. My current work is focused on biographies and subjective experiences of eviction and struggle, while also considering neighborhood effects and structural dimensions of gentrification. In 2020 I became Group Coordinator and Deputy Director of my research Unit. Since 2016, I have published 5 books: 2 as author/co-author in recognized Portuguese scientific publishers and 3 as co-editor, 2 of these in Springer and Palgrave. I have published 9 book chapters (4 in leading international publishing houses Emerald, Springer & Palgrave) and 6 articles in international peer-reviewed periodicals, including Scopus-Q1 journals such as the Journal of Urban Affairs, Urban Research and Practice, City & Community and Eure - Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios Urbanos y Regionales.
