Personal information

Ana Maria Buttle de Mendonça Mourão Possidónio de Armada is Assistant Researcher in the Unit of Research and Teaching of Medical Microbiology at the Instituto of Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL, Lisbon, Portugal), since 2009. Ana Armada has a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (Portugal) and a Master degree in Biotechnology. She concluded a PhD in Human Genetics and Infectious Disease at IHMT and NOVA Medical School (NMS)-Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM/UNL). She published 13 peer reviewed articles in specialized magazines. She is author of one book chapter, coauthor of two book chapter, her research study was awarded for the best work and oral presentation (presented by her master student in Brasil) and 37 scientific communications (10 oral and 27 posters). Since 2015, she is part of the GHTM/IHMT team responsible for the flow cytometer facility. She has been a member of the research team of 9 projects, supervised and/or co-supervised six MSc students, four undergraduate thesis and technical scientific support/advise to many PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Currently, she is participating in the Scientific Committee of the PhD in Biomedical Sciences (IHMT-UNL PhD), lectures in several curricular units in the area of Immunology, Tuberculosis (also have an e-learning lecture), Biosecurity (also have an e-learning lecture) and Drug resistance in PhD and Master programmes of IHMT-NOVA. In 2012, she integrated the IHMT/UNL technical-scientific mission to Guinea Bissau National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (LNR-TB) of the National Public Health Laboratory (LNSP) / National Institute of Public Health ( INASA) / Guinea Ministry of Health to support the installation of direct molecular technologies for the detection of tuberculosis resistance. Her main research interests include immunology, epitope mapping using phage display libraries, vaccines, proteins, production of monoclonal antibodies, and immunofluorescence techniques. Since 2009, her research lines have been directed to the study (i) of inter-relations between pathogenic microorganisms (M. tuberculosis, Leishmania spp., B. burgdoferi s. l., and Leptospira interrogans) and the host cell (macrophages), and (ii) development of new diagnostic tools and alternative therapies for the treatment of drug-resistant diseases, in Tuberculosis and cancer, by examining the ability of microRNAs and natural compounds to revert drug resistance through interaction with ABC transporters and gene methylation patterns, thus acting as chemosensitizers.
