Personal profile

Personal information

I hold a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. I am, since 2012, an Associate Professor with Habilitation at NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon (FCT NOVA), Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering.

I lecture “Soil and Soil Pollution”, “Remediation Techniques” at the Master of Environmental Engineering, and “Characterization, Monitoring and Rehabilitation Techniques” at the Master "Advanced Materials Innovative Recycling", a label programme from European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Raw Materials.  Between 2016 - 2018 I was the Manager, in Portugal, of the Journey Climate-KIC (format acknowledged as a best-case example of Innovation in Higher Education by the OECD (HEInnovate).

I am presently a member of the Faculty Council FCT NOVA and I was twice an elected member of the Scientific Council FCT NOVA, having directed, between  2013-2017 the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE).

I have been coordinating international projects (e.g. e.THROUGH-H2020-MSCA-RISE-2017-778045, ELECTROACROSS-FP7-PEOPLE-2010-IRSES/MC-269289) and leading FCT NOVA team is several others (e.g. MIREU-H2020-SC5-2017-776811, REMIX-INTERREG Europe-PGI02400, 4KET4Reuse-INTERREG Sudoe-SOE1/P1/E0253). Also, I have coordinated/being a partner in 18 other national research projects. Most of the projects are inter and transdisciplinary, on electro based technologies (EBS) in the scope of circular economy, studying the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from e.g. wastewater, sludge, soil, mine waste, fly ash, aiming the valorization of the solids and the liquids (electrolytes), with critical raw materials recovering, at different scales. Lately, the exploitation of the self-produced hydrogen by the EBS has been studied, having 2 international patents pending. The development of new analytical methodologies for the characterization of complex environmental polluted matrices and monitoring of the remediation/recovery is also one of my team aims.

I have concluded the supervision/co-supervision of 6 Post Docs (two of them won a Junior and an Auxiliary CEEC contract), 10 PhDs (with 4 more ongoing), 30 MScs across different disciplines, having published 2 books and more than 115 papers in Q1 international peer-reviewed journals. By February 2021 the Google Scholar platform reported my impact with an h-index=33 and i10-index=79.
