Personal information

Alexandra B. Ribeiro holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering by the Technical University of Denmark. She is a Full Professor at NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon (FCT NOVA), Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. She lectures Soil and Soil Pollution, Remediation Techniques in several PhD, Master and Post-graduate programs, and “Characterization, Monitoring and Rehabilitation Techniques” at the Master "Advanced Materials Innovative Recycling", a label programme from European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Raw Materials. Between 2016 - 2018 she Managed, in Portugal, the Journey Climate-KIC (format acknowledged as a best-case example of Innovation in Higher Education by the OECD (HEInnovate).

Currently an elected member of the Scientific Council FCT NOVA, she was a member of the Faculty Council FCT NOVA, and between 2013-2017 directed the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE), of which was one of the co-founders in 2007.

Alexandra has been coordinating international projects (e.g. e.THROUGH-H2020-MSCA-RISE-2017-778045, ELECTROACROSS-FP7-PEOPLE-2010-IRSES/MC-269289) and leading FCT NOVA team is several others (e.g. RELiEF-HORIZON-CL5-2021-D2-01-01, MIREU-H2020-SC5-2017-776811, REMIX-INTERREG Europe-PGI02400, 4KET4Reuse-INTERREG Sudoe-SOE1/P1/E0253). Also, has coordinated/being a partner in 19 other national research projects. Most of the projects are inter and transdisciplinary, on electro based technologies (EBS) in the scope of circular economy, studying the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from e.g. wastewater, sludge, soil, mine waste, fly ash, aiming the valorization of the solids and the liquids (electrolytes), with critical raw materials recovering, at different scales. Lately, the exploitation of the self-produced hydrogen by the EBS has been studied, having 2 international patents pending. The development of new analytical methodologies for the characterization of complex environmental polluted matrices and monitoring of the remediation/recovery is also one of her team aims.

Supervised/co-supervised 9 Post Docs (two of them won a Junior and an Auxiliary CEEC contract), 13 PhDs (1 more ongoing), 33 MScs across different disciplines, having published 2 books and more than 115 papers in Q1 international peer-reviewed journals. By July 2023 the Google Scholar platform reported my impact with an h-index=39 and i10-index=99.
