Personal profile

Research interests

I graduated in Biochemistry in Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) and, in 2012, I received my Ph.D. in Structural Biochemistry from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT-NOVA). I focused my research on the study of the molecular determinants that define ligand specificity to carbohydrate-binding proteins. During my doctoral studies, I combined several techniques in the field of structural biology including NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, molecular biology and molecular docking. In 2013, I was awarded the António Xavier Prize, for the Best National Thesis in the field of NMR in 2012. In 2012, I attained a position as a Scientific Officer at Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), which gave me relevant science and technology management skills. Between 2007 and 2012 I was integrated in 4 national research projects funded by FCT. In September 2013, to embrace a new scientific challenge, I took a postdoctoral research position in Germany (Heinrich-Heine University Duesseldorf), in the group of Dr. M. Etzkorn to study membrane protein structure and function by NMR. Shortly after, I was awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers (which I kindly declined) and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship (April 2015 to May 2017) to study the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor. Focal points included protein structure determination, biomolecular interactions, membrane mimetics (amphipols and nanodiscs) and NMR pulse sequence development (UTOPIA-NMR).
