Ágatha Francesconi Gatti is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at CHAM, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, since August 2024. She holds a PhD in Economic History (2021) from the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), a M.A. in Social History (2010) and a A. B. in History (2005) from the same university. She obtained fellowships from the "Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo" (FAPESP) at all stages of her academic training (scientific initiation, master's and doctorate). She was visiting researcher at ICS-UL and at CIDEHUS-UE, and she is currently undertaking a three-month research training period at Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory. Over the past year, she has completed extended research placements in archives that are central to her research, namely the Archivo Historico Nacional de Madrid, the Archivo General de Indias, the Archivio Storico De Propaganda Fide, the Archivio Apostolic Vaticano, the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, and the Biblioteca da Ajuda. These experiences provided her with an outstanding domain of the collections and funds with manuscript documentation related to the History of the Church in the Modern Period and the History of Iberian Empires.
Research interests
Her research encompasses the Modern Period, mainly the History of the Portuguese Empire and the History of Christianity in the 17th and 18th centuries, focusing on the following topics: Portuguese Colonialism; Diplomatic relations between Portugal and the Holy See; royal patronages; Indigenous history; Juntas de Missões; missionary policies; Holy See; Propaganda Fide.
