Organisation profile

Profile Information

History, Territories and Communities is a hub at NOVA FCSH of the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People and the Planet. The Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet (CFE) is a R&D unit hosted by the University of Coimbra that brings together researchers from all fields of ecology, integrating knowledge from genes to the biome level to disentangle the mechanisms responsible for biodiversity maintenance, and for the composition, structure and functioning of biological communities and ecosystems. CFE holds a strong commitment to knowledge transfer to the public and to the productive sector, with emphasis on the sustainability of territories and local communities.
The research group History, Territories and Communities (HTC) is a hub at NOVA FCSH of the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People and the Planet.
Its focus is History - the study of the human past, in its intrinsic relationship with territories and communities, understanding the span of the essential interconnections of Social Sciences and Humanities with other disciplinary areas raised by contemporary societal challenges in interaction with the complexity of the global commitment to sustainability.
HTC adopts a perspective of the heritage and legacy of history alongside the heritage and culture of biodiversity in the spatial planning and life of communities, studying and making known trajectories and identities, understanding the processes of transformation, in their changing and characteristics of a diverse nature – institutional, political, economic, social, and cultural.
Its transdisciplinary reflexive faculty is based not only on methodologies and interdisciplinary subjects and approaches, including the study of the anthropocene, but also in collaborative studies and  multidisciplinary dimension, essential  approaches to understanding and overcoming societal challenges,  according to the United Nations 2030 Agenda  and in convergence with Horizon Europe (2021-2027).
It brings together researchers of different backgrounds in various research lines guided by a common agenda, focused on the pursuit of specific work programs, maintaining as a fundamental element the transversal dialogue with the research dynamics pursued by CEF-UC and raised by its dedicated mission the sustainability of territories and the well-being of communities.
HTC constitutes a platform for encounter, reflection and effective interaction between the Social Sciences and the Humanities and the Life Sciences and other disciplinary areas to contribute to the achievement of the fundamental scientific missions dedicated to overcoming the main challenges of our contemporaneity, adopting a dialogical method that focuses on the global context and local specificities.
