NOVA's Philosophy Department has a highly qualified faculty, offers quality graduate and postgraduate training, and its connection to national and international research centers promotes excellence research in the scientific area of Philosophical Studies.
At NOVA FCSH, the Philosophy Department is associated to two research centers, both funded by FCT and classified as "Excellent":
- IFILNOVA - Institute of Philosophy of Nova
- CHAM - Humanities Center
The Department of Philosophy has existed since 1980, the year in which the Degree in Philosophy began. That same year, the Master in Philosophy was also launched, the first to work in Portugal. This led to the Department of Philosophy have trained many of NOVA's philosophy professors, but also of other Portuguese universities. In the last 30 years, the teaching of the Educational Formation Branch in Philosophy has also enabled successive generations of secondary school teachers to be formed.
The New Philosophy Department is proud to have had, over the years, great teachers of philosophy, such as Fernando Gil, José Gil, or Maria Filomena Molder.
