Profile Information

The Department offers an undergraduate degree in Anthropology that combines a solid theoretical content with a practical component. The scope of optional courses available enables students to establish contact with the diverse study areas, characteristic of contemporary Anthropology, solidly grounded on an adequate classical background.
The possibility of selecting traineeships during the undergraduate degree facilitates the contact with the Portuguese research system, with civil society and cultural institutions.
The Major/Minor system allow for the association with other disciplinary areas within FCSH.
The Department offers a Masters degree with two specialisation areas – Contemporary Themes and Visual Cultures – and participates in the Masters programmes Migrations Inter-Ethnicities and Trans-Nationalism and Urban Studies.
The Department offers a PhD Degree in Anthropology with eight specialisation areas and, in partnership with ISCTE-IUL, a PhD of excellence (financed by FCT) in Anthropology – Politics and Images of Culture and Museology.
It offers two interdisciplinary post-graduations in Forensic Sciences and Contemporary Islam – Cultures and Societies and several Summer and Winter courses.
It has protocols with other national and international higher education institutions, cooperating on international mobility programmes that allow students to attend foreign Universities under the programmes Erasmus-Socrates and Erasmus-Mundus Fellow.
The teaching staff engages in a wide range of research areas, reflected on the courses’ structure proposed by the Department at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Cycles of study.
