The recent stalling of the UN negotiations for the High Seas Treaty highlighted the multifaceted role of science in international negotiations and the critical need to diversify voices in reaching an equitable outcome. This presentation will explore – in the context of the negotiations, (i) the role of science diplomacy; (ii) challenges and opportunities for advancing equity in the global ocean commons; and (iii) ideas to support the conclusion of negotiations.
