The Kyriale in Portuguese Manuscripts: An Analyis of Sources from the 15th and 16th Centuries

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

This paper aims to present some preliminary results from my research on the Kyriale, carried out as part of two ongoing projects at CESEM, NOVA University of Lisbon: Text and Voices lost and found. Recovering, reconstituting, and recreating musical fragments (c.1100-c.1600) (PI: João Pedro d’Alvarenga) and The Musical Manuscripts from the Monastery of Belém (PI: Océane Boudeau).
The Kyriale, as known, is the book (or book section) containing the five most relevant chants of the Ordinarium Missae: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.
For this paper, the relevant sources, dated from between the 15 th and 16 th centuries, were chosen from five traditions: Hieronymite, Franciscan, Cistercian, Dominican, and the Augustinian Canons Regular of Coimbra. In terms of provenance, these were used on monasteries in Arouca, Évora, Guimarães, Lisboa, Porto and Coimbra and only the complete (or nearly complete) copies were considered, in order to provide as much of a comprehensive view as possible.
Through the identification and comparison of the chants, we aim to understand and catalogue their similarities and/or their unique features (e.g., melodic contour, modality, presence of tropes, the feasts), expanding the available information on issues of reception and transmission of this branch of plainchant repertoire in Portugal.
