Description
Intercultural citizenship education (ICE) combines the intercultural communicative competence of foreign language education with civic action in the community from citizenship education. This implies that a learning sequence with the intention of promoting ICE will necessarily require three sets of interconnected learning objectives: linguistic, intercultural and citizenship. Such an educational approach requires the development of a particular set of practitioner competencies. This paper introduces the ICEPro Professional Development Course, one of the four intellectual outputs associated with the ICEPELL project. I will show how the course brings together its main theoretical concepts and present the educational framework which structured competency development. Following an outline of the different roles undertaken by the teacher educators during the different stages of the course, I conclude with a brief overview of the practitioner competencies associated with mediating picturebooks for ICE evidenced during the course and the follow-up classroom implementation.
